Parshat Toldot |
The Torah portion of the week - An explanation of the first verse in the Torah reading
The introductory verse in the Torah portion of the week starts with the words "...And these are the generations of Issac, the son of Abraham..." Rashi, the prime commentator on the Torah, explains that the Hebrew word in this verse "Toldot" (translated here as generations) also means children, i.e. ..."These are the children of Issac - (Jacob and Esav)". Other commentators explain the Hebrew word "Toldot" to mean events, i.e. "...These are the events which occured in the life of Issac..." What compelled Rashi to explain the word "Toldot" to mean children? What relevancy does Rashi's explanation have in our generation? |
|
"In light of the fact that our generation is the last generation of the exile and the first one in the era of redemption, special emphasis is placed on the Jew's divine service of influencing the non-Jews in all matters of good, justice and integrity through their performance of the seven Noatic Laws, as a preparation to the fulfillment of the verse where G-d says, "I will turn to the nations (of the world) wth a clear language... to worship Him with one portion." |

Redemption and Moshiach. The first part of our Torah portion teaches us about the revelation of Moshiach
The entire essence of a Jew should be infused with Moshiach from the time he wakes up in the morning and throughout the day arouses everyone and everything in this matter from anew.
"...As alluded to at the beginning of the weekly Torah portion reading, "And these are the generations of Issac". King Moshiach's birth (the revelation of his existence) is revealed to everyone ("And these"), until the point where "...All that hear will rejoice with me..." until the point where he will also affect the nations of the world..." |

The most important thing is to do. One's personal conduct in the month of Kislev.
The month of Kislev is replete with "Chassidic" dates and special days in the story of Chabad. The first date is the first of the month, when in 5738 (1978) the Chassidim were privileged to see the Lubavitcher Rebbe's face after more than a month due to medical treatment. The next Chassidic date is on the ninth and tenth of Kislev, (the birthday and departure from this world of the second Chabad Rebbe, Rav Dov Ber, as well as his release from prison. The third is the fourteenth day of the month, when we celebrate the Lubavitcher Rebbe's wedding anniversary, followed by the "holiday of holidays", the nineteenth and twentieth days of the month, the days opon which the Alter Rebbe, the first Chabad Rebbe who founded the movement, was released from prison after a most difficult stay during which he was slandered, in addition to being physically and spiritually abused. How can we be "in control of" all these holidays? How can we utilize them in the most productive way? All the answers can be found in the following talk. |
|
"...Organize farbrengens (Chassidic get togethers) on all of the Chassidic holidays (the men should make their own and the women their own) everywhere, whether in nearby or far-off places, whether in the Diaspora or (all the more so) in the Land of Israel". |

The Complete Land of Israel. Concealing the truth from the public and keeping the press quiet
Eighteen years ago, the Lubavitcher Rebbe screamed and warned that the Jewish nation will have to pay the price for not finishing the military maneuvers in Lebanon and not destroying the murderers there. Today, unfortunately, we see how much the Lubavitcher Rebbe was right and how wrong the Israeli leaders of state were for not heeding the Lubavitcher Rebbe's advice. We now see the results. The following excerpt from a talk by the Lubavitcher Rebbe on the complete Land of Israel that was delivered on the nineteenth day of Kislev, 5743 (1982) illustrates the above point quite well. |
|
"...One of the newspapers outside of Israel wasn't even embarrassed to print an article about an event that happened about 2 months ago, when a car rigged to explode in Be-air Sheva went off and miraculously people were saved! |
